KYIV. May 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The German defense concern Rheinmetall AG is working on a UAV that can carry up to eight barrage ammunition, and then launch them at targets, Defense news reports.
“The Combat Drone will be capable of carrying and deploying different types of rotary-wing loitering munitions, which, depending on the kind and configuration, could total 8 effectors,” Rheinmetall spokesman Jan-Phillip Weisswange told Defense News.
However, the timing for finalizing the idea will ultimately depend on customer interest, according to Weisswange.
In April, Rheinmetall AG presented a video demonstration of the development, which shows how the UAV is launched from a stationary installation, and then in flight it drops kamikaze drones. They first destroy tracking devices around the perimeter of the site, and then undermine the barn where the vehicle is hidden.
The development is based on the German reconnaissance UAV Luna X 2000, which the Bundeswehr has been using since the early 2000s. It can stay in the air for 12 hours, fly at a distance of up to 100 km.
