KYIV. Nov 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The absolute majority of Ukrainians, 88% believe that the future of Ukraine will develop in an optimistic way and in 10 years Ukraine will be a prosperous country within the European Union, according to the results of a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
It is noted that 63% of them fully share this view, but 26% rather agree.
At the same time, only 5% of respondents have pessimistic expectations that in 10 years Ukraine will be a devastated country with an outflow of people.
Respondents who are optimistic about the future of Ukraine in 10 years were asked an additional question whether they are ready to experience financial difficulties for 3-5 years in order to achieve a positive result in the future.
Among such optimistic respondents, 96% are ready to experience financial difficulties for 3-5 years if, as a result, Ukraine becomes a prosperous country and a member of the European Union.
It is also noted that the ratio of expectations varies depending on the region of residence, age and the respondent’s chosen language for the interview (Ukrainian or Russian), but the absolute majority expresses positive expectations for the future. Thus, the number of optimistic respondents varies from west to east (from 90% to 76%), from young people to citizens of retirement age – from 94% to 81%. Among Ukrainian–speaking respondents, 90% expressed optimistic views on the future of Ukraine, and 77% of respondents expressed optimistic views on the future of Ukraine.
The survey was conducted by KIIS from October 21 to October 23, 2022 as part of the all-Ukrainian public opinion poll Omnibus. The method of telephone interviews using a computer (computer-assisted telephone interviewing, CATI) was used based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers (with random generation of telephone numbers and subsequent statistical weighting). A total of 1,000 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except Crimea) were interviewed. The survey was conducted with adults (aged 18 years and older) citizens of Ukraine who at the time of the survey lived on the territory of Ukraine (within the limits controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022). The sample did not include residents of territories that were temporarily not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022 (Crimea, Sevastopol, certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions), and the survey was not conducted with citizens who went abroad after February 24, 2022.
It is noted that formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 3.4% for indicators close to 50%, 3.0% for indicators close to 25%, 2.1% for indicators close to 10%, and 1.5% for indicators close to 5%. In the conditions of war, in addition to the specified formal error, a certain systematic deviation is added. In particular, if in May, among all respondents surveyed, 2.5-4% lived in the territories occupied after February 24 (and this corresponded to the percentage of those living there, because the generation of phone numbers was random), now, due to the disconnection of telephone communication by the occupiers, it was possible to interview fewer respondents living in the occupied settlements – their the amount is 0.3%. Despite the fact that although the views of the respondents who lived in the occupation differed somewhat, but at the same time the general trends were quite similar. That is, the inability to interview such respondents now does not significantly affect the quality of the results.
