Backfire attack drone ready for mass production – minister

KYIV. Nov 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Backfire attack drone, which is resistant to Russian electronic warfare, “has passed the commission of the Defense Ministry and is awaiting an operating permit,” Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology Development Mykhailo Fedorov, who is also the Digital Transformation Minister of Ukraine, has said.

“The ‘bird’ has passed the commission of the Defense Ministry and is awaiting an operating permit. This means that the government will be able to officially purchase these drones. The team of developers is already preparing for the mass production of UAVs,” he said on the Telegram channel on Monday.

The Backfire drone showed good results at the front, the minister said.

“In recent two months, the military completed at least 50 successful missions. The developers cooperate with the Angry Birds combined detachments of the AFU [Armed Forces of Ukraine] which help to improve the drone,” he said.

According to Fedorov, Backfire is an attack drone made by Ukrainian developers as part of the Brave1 defense cluster. The drone can fly up to 35 kilometers into the enemy’s rear and strike Russian artillery, logistic units, ammunition depots, and command posts.

“Thanks to a GPS antenna, which cannot be suppressed, the drone is very resistant to enemy electronic warfare. Also, due to a full autonomy of the drone, the Russian forces cannot detect its coordinates as well as coordinates of its ground crew. This will protect operators,” Fedorov said.

“We continue to increase the number of drones at the front. If you also already have developments that will help the defense forces, you may apply through the Brave1 platform,” he said.
