Belarus adopts bill that allows depriving citizens by birth of citizenship

MINSK. Dec 14 (Interfax) – A bill amending the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Belarus has passed two readings in the House of Representatives of the Belarusian Parliament to allow depriving citizens by birth of their citizenship, the House press service said on Wednesday.

"The main innovation of the bill is […] a new reason for the deprivation of citizenship. This is a Belarusian court ruling, which takes effect and confirms the involvement of a person in extremist activities or severe damage done by such a person to the interests of the Republic of Belarus when such a person lives outside Belarus," the press service said.

Only naturalized persons could be deprived of Belarusian citizenship earlier.

The bill compels Belarusian citizens to notify law enforcement authorities on paper or online about their citizenship in another country, as well as a residence permit or another document issued by a foreign state that entitles them to preferences for political and religious views or nationality.
