Canada joins EU Mission in Armenia

YEREVAN. Oct 26 (Interfax) – Canada has become the first non-EU country to join the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA), Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.

Canada will be the first non-EU country to join the mission, Joly said visiting the EUMA office in the Armenian town of Jermuk on the border with Azerbaijan.

The logistics of Canada’s integration into this crucial mission will be discussed in terms of solving regional humanitarian problems and ensuring peace and stability, she said.

Joly will visit Armenian army positions and meet with displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh while in Jermuk, the Armenian state-run news agency Armenpress said.

On February 20, the EU said it was launching a two-year civilian mission in Armenia. The mission was tasked with conducting regular patrols, reporting the situation, assisting in promoting stability in Armenia’s border areas, and facilitating the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations with the EU’s support. The mission has approximately 100 members, including about 50 unarmed observers.
