KYIV. Dec 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian law enforcers launched criminal proceedings into a video of Russian army attacking Ukrainian defense forces using prisoners of war as a “live shield,” the Prosecutor General’s Office has said.
“Under the procedural guidance of Zaporizhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a criminal case was opened on the fact of violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” it said on the Telegram channel on Thursday.
According to the PGO, the ground for adding the case to the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations is the video which was published on the website of Radio Liberty.
“According to preliminary information, Russian servicemen, discarding the norms of international humanitarian law, blatantly used Ukrainian prisoners of war as a ‘live shield’ while carrying out combat operations against the Defense Forces of Ukraine in Zaporizhia axis,” it said.
Currently, priority investigative actions are being carried out. The progress of the pre-trial investigation is under the control of the PGO. The pre-trial investigation is carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Directorate in Zaporizhia region.
