KYIV. May 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – European member states should take a comprehensive approach to the issue of holding Russia accountable for the unleashed aggression against Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk has said.
“European member states must develop a comprehensive approach to hold Russia accountable for its actions. We welcome that the summit will support the establishment of an ad hoc international tribunal and a comprehensive international compensation mechanism,” Stefanchuk said, speaking via video link at a meeting of the PACE Standing Committee in Reykjavik on Monday.
Stefanchuk said the establishment of a register of losses caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine would be a historic decision that would allow the process of establishing justice to begin. “However, this is only the first step to ensure that justice prevails,” Stefanchuk said.
“I believe that in the coming days the leaders of the Council of Europe will unite and take a firm stand against Russian aggression against Ukraine. Our collective commitment to the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity must remain unwavering,” Stefanchuk said.
He said the world needs clear guarantees of non-recurrence of aggression, and not a broad discussion about peace.
Stefanchuk expressed confidence that the Council of Europe will play its role in the implementation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula.
As reported, the Council of Europe summit will be held on May 16 and 17 in Reykjavik.
