Investigations, court hearing of Maidan cases continue even in wartime – PGO

KYIV. Nov 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prosecutors and investigators are doing their best to continue investigations into the Maidan cases and consider them in court even during Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) has said.

The PGO said in the Telegram channel on Friday that during the discussion on the results of the investigation of crimes committed during the Revolution of Dignity, Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksiy Khomenko stressed the importance of uninterrupted investigation into this category of cases.

Regardless of active hostilities, in 2022, another 27 people were notified of suspicion in the Maidan cases. In particular, according to the PGO, suspicion has been reported to the former commander of the Berkut riot police in Sevastopol, who on February 18, 2014 actually organized the murder of three people by subordinate police officers and infliction of bodily injuries on 201 people. Later, having taken the position of a member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation from the so-called "legislative power of the city of Sevastopol", this person supported the military aggression against Ukraine.

"This example shows the connection between the actions on the Maidan and the war. Those who killed people on the Maidan are now actively participating in armed aggression on the side of the enemy," Khomenko said.

In addition, according to the PGO, the "main case" against the former President of Ukraine, the Interior Minister of Ukraine, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine and seven other high-ranking officials of that time is ready to be brought to court.

"Due to the delay of the defense side in getting acquainted with the materials of the investigation, the court, at the request of the prosecution in September 2022, limited the period for the defenders of the suspects to get acquainted with the materials of the proceedings until May 2023. Thus, already in the first half of the next year, the indictment on this important case will be taken to court," it said.

Also, the PGO said that prosecutors continue to ensure the maintenance of public prosecution in courts against 247 defendants, in particular, against five former employees of the Berkut riot police in the case on mass shooting at the protesters on Instytutska Street in Kyiv on February 20, 2014.
