Kazakhstan to conduct major int'l military drills in 2023 – defense minister

ASTANA. Jan 11 (Interfax) – Kazakhstan plans to conduct major international military exercises in 2023, Kazakh Defense Minister Ruslan Zhaksylykov said in a report to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev concerning the work the ministry did in 2022 and plans for 2023.

Zhaksylykov informed Tokayev on measures the ministry plans to undertake to maintain the Armed Forces’ combat capability and conduct major exercises, including international ones, the presidential press service said on Wednesday.

"Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was presented with information on the Kazakh army’s combat capability, the upgrading of its composition and structure, and operational and combat training procedures that have been conducted," it said.

Kazakhstan instituted Special Operations Forces, bolstered the capability of its Airborne Assault Forces, and updated its combat training programs with regard to new challenges and threats in 2022, Zhaksylykov said.

The minister presented information on the Kazakh Armed Forces’ provision with modern hardware and weapons, the development of territorial defense forces, the upgrading of the military infrastructure, and the improvement of their peacekeeping capability.

"Based on the meeting’s outcomes, the president emphasized the importance of protecting the service members’ lives and health and improving the moral and psychological climate within military units. He also set a number of objectives to the ministry to further increase the country’s defense capability and properly organize the spring military draft," it said.
