Kornienko, Volker discuss creation of special Intl Tribunal for Russia’s crimes

KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Kornienko and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Turk Volker discussed the creation of a Special International Tribunal for War Crimes of Russia and the prosecution of the Russian Federation for crimes committed in Ukraine.

"It is important for us to publicly condemn Russia’s war crimes by the UN High Commissioner, because the aggressor country is destroying civilian infrastructure with missiles and artillery," Kornienko said, the press service of the Verkhovna Rada reports.

Kornienko noted that the parliament is actively working to ensure that the international community takes real steps to create such a tribunal.

He called on the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, through the mechanisms at its disposal, to join the mission to return Ukrainian children to Ukraine.

"Our country is also extremely concerned about the situation with our prisoners — Russia is holding thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians in appalling conditions," Kornienko emphasized.

He called on international human rights organizations to find all possible ways to monitor the observance of the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
