Kostin highly appreciates G7 declaration calling to prevent impunity for Russian war crimes

KYIV. Nov 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin has said he highly appreciates the adoption of the Berlin Declaration by the G7 calling to prevent impunity for war crimes and other atrocities and welcomes intention of the Bundestag to consider the issue of recognizing the Holodomor Famine of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) said on the Telegram channel on Wednesday that Kostin said this at a meeting with Bundestag members Britta Hasselmann, Katharina Dröge, Rolf Mützenich, and Christian Dürr.

According to the PGO, the Ukrainian prosecutor general welcomed the intention of the Bundestag to consider the issue of recognizing the Holodomor Famine of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

"Today, almost a century later, Russia is again trying to destroy the Ukrainian nation. The genocide of Ukrainians must be stopped!" he said.

Also, during the meeting with the Bundestag members, Kostin raised the issue of the available and necessary mechanisms for holding Russian accountable for crimes committed in Ukraine.

"The prosecutor general said that the scale of the damage caused by Russian aggression is catastrophic. And it is not just about the damage to the people of Ukraine. He explained that Ukrainian prosecutors record enormous environmental losses. And this is a problem for the whole world. To date, more than 680,000 tonnes of oil products were burnt. Attacks on nuclear power plants are of particular concern," the PGO said.

On November 29, the G7 Justice Ministers held a meeting, following which a declaration was adopted calling for the prevention of impunity for war crimes. The ministers also agreed to coordinate the investigation of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
