Macron considers Ukraine's accession to NATO unlikely

KYIV. Dec 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – French President Emmanuel Macron believes that Ukraine’s entry into NATO is not "the most likely scenario."

"Regardless of whether Ukraine joins NATO – and this is not the most likely scenario – however, it will have to be given stronger security guarantees, since it has been attacked by Russia," he said in an interview with the French daily newspaper Le Monde, the American Wall Street Journal and the Lebanese An Nahar.

Macron also insists on the need to provide "security guarantees" to Russia at the end of the war.

In addition, Macron said that Europe needs to play a more active role in NATO, "reducing its reliance on the United States and developing its own defense capabilities, to secure peace in a region."

At the same time, he said he does not consider his desire to develop European defense as an alternative to NATO.
