Myth about Ukraine as most corrupt country dispelled – Yermak on EC's decision to begin talks on Ukraine's accession to EU

KYIV. Nov 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Commission’s (EC) recommendation to begin negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU means that the myth about the most corrupt country and the slowdown in reforms is dispelled, according to a commentary by head of the President’s Office of Ukraine Andriy Yermak, transmitted to Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

“What do we have in bottom line? First of all, the statement that Ukraine has fulfilled almost all the recommendations of the European Commission. The myth about the most corrupt country in Europe is dispelled. The myth about the slowdown in reforms is dispelled. The myth about the decline of democracy is dispelled. We have moved to the next level. And we move on. We are like-minded people, and we see it the same way: Europe needs Ukraine, and Ukraine needs Europe,” Yermak said.

“There is a common strategic task: unification for the sake of security and prosperity. That is, the road map along which we are moving is our common plan, a plan for further reforms. That is, we are talking about mutual interests,” he noted.

A new wave of enlargement, Yermak believes, has become a pressing issue for the European Union. “And we see how a consensus is maturing in the EU on the need for a political decision on this step. But the main thing for today is that Ukraine has won another intermediate victory. The path to the start of accession negotiations is already practically open,” he emphasized.

“Despite the skepticism, speculation and outright lies of our enemies, we are moving towards the goal step by step. Now there is another indisputable proof that, despite Russian aggression and the permanent information war, we are confidently moving along the path of reforms and democratic transformation,” the head of the President’s Office said.
