NASU urges international partners to strengthen science sanctions against Russia

KYIV. Dec 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) has called on the international scientific community to impose tougher scientific sanctions against Russia.

"While other countries are launching space missions, inventing medicines for previously incurable diseases, developing artificial intelligence technologies, the Russian Federation is massively shelling Ukrainian critical infrastructure, again and again depriving millions of Ukrainians of light, heat and water. Dozens of peaceful cities and hundreds of civilian facilities throughout Ukraine suffered from Russian artillery and rocket attacks. Scientific institutions, educational institutions, research infrastructure facilities are no exception," the NASU said in a statement.

It gave examples of the destruction of scientific and research infrastructure, and stated that, in fact, Russian aggression is purposefully destroying science in Ukraine as a profession, a vital foundation of Ukrainian statehood, a guarantee of post-war recovery.

"We call on the world scientific community to stop any cooperation with all Russian scientists and research organizations, as well as to expel Russia and its individual and collective members from all international scientific organizations, programs and projects," the statement says.

The NASU believes that tougher scientific sanctions should show Russia that it is unacceptable to wage a war to destroy an entire nation, blackmail the world with nuclear weapons, stop access to energy resources and threaten with hunger in the 21st century.
