NATO allies discuss Ukraine's bid for membership, confirming support for integration

BUCHAREST. Nov 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The NATO allies discussed Ukraine’s bid for membership in the alliance, supporting its Euro–Atlantic aspirations, but stated that now the focus is on supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference in Bucharest on Tuesday at the end of the first day of the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO member countries.

He said that at their meeting they also touched upon Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The Foreign Ministers reaffirmed NATO’s support for Ukraine’s right to choose its own path, and reiterated that they recognize and respect Ukraine’s desire for membership. However, now they are focused on providing immediate support, as Ukraine is defending itself from Russian aggression.
