New president of Hungary condemns Russia’s aggression, supports Ukraine's accession to EU – media

KYIV. May 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – New President of Hungary Katalin Éva Novák, during the inauguration ceremony on Saturday voiced her position on the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, in which she declared support for the European integration of Ukraine and condemned Russian aggression, European Pravda with reference to the Hungarian edition of Telex said on Saturday.

As noted in the message, Novak named 10 provisions, which set out the position on the Russian invasion and attitude towards Ukraine. "We condemn Putin’s aggression, an armed attack on a sovereign state. We will forever say "no" to all efforts to restore the Soviet Union… We demand the investigation and punishment of war crimes. We are not neutral, we are on the side of innocent victims and the truth… We support Ukraine’s accession to the EU," she said.

The Hungarian head of state also stated Hungary’s intentions to fulfill its obligations within the EU and NATO, "but if Hungarian interests want it, we will say no." In addition, according to her, the Hungarian side, as before, insists on ensuring the rights of Hungarians living in Ukraine.

Novak also said that Hungary "is ready to sacrifice for peace and will not hinder the help of our allies, but we will not agree to decisions requiring Hungarians to sacrifice more than the harm they cause to the Russian aggressor."

In addition, she declared Hungary’s readiness to mediate between the warring parties.

According to the publication, 44-year-old Novak became the first female president of Hungary, as well as the youngest president among all EU countries. She replaced Janos Ader, who left the post, after the completion of the second term.

Novak served as deputy leader of Fidesz Viktor Orban and was Minister of Family Affairs, responsible for the program of economic support for the middle class, including housing subsidies, government housing loans and tax cuts.
