Prosecutor General: Victims of Russia’s intl crimes deserve effective and prompt compensation for damages

KYIV. Dec 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin notes the need to involve the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) in the creation of a compensation mechanism, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has reported.

The agency’s message on the Telegram channel on Monday states that Kostin met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and head of the UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine Matilda Bogner.

The Prosecutor General stressed that the international crimes of the Russian Federation recorded by Ukrainian law enforcement officers echo the conclusions from the reports of the UN monitoring Mission.

"We are glad that both our institutions consider these actions to be serious violations of international humanitarian law and gross violations of human rights," the Prosecutor General stressed.

The message of the department says that Kostin drew the attention of the High Commissioner to the need to involve his Office in the creation of a compensation mechanism.

"We firmly believe that the victims of international crimes of the Russian Federation deserve adequate, effective and prompt compensation for damages. We appreciate the recent decision of the UN General Assembly to recognize the need to create such a mechanism and recommendations for the creation of an International Register of Losses in cooperation with Ukraine. This decision was supported by the President of the European Commission. We hope that your Office will be involved in this process as a defender of the rights of victims," the Prosecutor General stressed.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Turk, in turn, expressed gratitude for cooperation with Ukrainian prosecutors, he agreed with the need to intensify the use of existing international mechanisms to work in this direction.
