TBILISI. Sept 1 (Interfax) – The ruling Georgian Dream party initiates the impeachment of Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, party chair Irakli Kobakhidze said at a press briefing on Friday.
“We have decided at a meeting of the party’s political council to initiate the impeachment of President Salome Zourabichvili, who has breached the national Constitution by not coordinating her visit to Europe with the government,” Kobakhidze said.
However, the impeachment has little chances for success in the parliament, he said, as it would take 100 out of 150 votes for the impeachment to pass. The ruling party does not have these votes, he said.
“Despite of this, we are initiating the impeachment procedure, as we cannot allow the president to breach the constitution. We will file a motion with the Constitutional Court to confirm the violation committed by the president, and will then put the issue to a vote in the parliament. The opposition’s refusal to support the impeachment will be yet another proof that the president and the opposition are acting in the same vein,” Kobakhidze said.
Zourabichvili arrived in Germany on Thursday. The presidential administration said she would meet with the EU leadership on Friday.
