BRUSSELS. Dec 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is convinced of the need to take the next step in the enlargement process for Ukraine by deciding to begin membership negotiations.
This follows from what he said in Brussels on Thursday upon his arrival at a meeting of the European Council.
“And especially in the case of Ukraine, we think it is a necessary sign that we support the activities of the Ukrainians to meet all the measures that we ask them to meet… We support all the proposals of the European Commission,” Scholz said.
At the same time, the Chancellor expressed confidence in the need to hold a discussion on enlargement. “We must make progress in this accession processes we have. It is a decision of the European Union that we are ready for enlargement, discussing with the Western Balkan states, discussing with Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia,” he said.
