SkyUp plane could be destroyed at Sudan airport during clashes, airline unable to confirm this info without access to scene

KYIV. Apr 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Maxar Technologies posted on Twitter satellite pictures of the Khartoum Airport in Sudan where 14 planes were damaged to varying degrees during the armed clashes between the army of Sudan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Avianews website claimed that one of the charred airframes seen in the picture was a Boeing 737-800 that belonged to Ukrainian airline SkyUp. It can be seen in the picture that the Ukrainian aircraft left only charred wreckage, it said.

However, SkyUp told Interfax-Ukraine that it could either confirm or deny this information.

“At the moment, there is not a single chance to reach the plane in order to confirm or deny the reports about its condition,” the press service of the airline said.

Earlier, media reported that a plane of Ukrainian airline SkyUp caught fire at the Khartoum Airport during the armed clashed in the capital of Sudan. SkyUp reported that the EPIRB was activated on board of one of its two planes. The airline also said it was impossible to check the condition of the aircraft.

According to Avianews, the second Boeing 737-800 of the airline was at the nearby parking position. It also said that no serious damages to the plane could be seen in the picture, however, only specialists can assess the condition of the aircraft after a detailed examination. The publication alleged that the fuselage of the aircraft could be damaged, breaking the aircraft tightness and system operation.

Two planes of SkyUp Airlines were located in Sudan under an ACMI contract with the Sun Air airline. They carried out flights to Cairo (Egypt), Riyadh and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) since the beginning of 2023.

As reported, SkyUp Airlines evacuated its last plane from the Boryspil Airport to Iași, Romania.
