Stefanchuk expects start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to EU in 2023

KYIV. Jan 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk expects the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in 2023.

"The Ukrainian parliament has fulfilled its part of the recommendations of the European Commission. Therefore, we are now awaiting a report from the European Commission on the implementation of these seven recommendations by Ukraine and the start of negotiations on membership in the European Union," Stefanchuk said on Facebook on Tuesday.

He said that in order to start negotiations, Ukraine would need the consensus of all 27 EU member states, as was the case with the candidate status.

"I hope for a positive decision in 2023," the chairman said.

Stefanchuk said Sweden and Spain are chairing the EU Council in 2023.

As reported, Ukraine received the status of a candidate country for EU membership in 2022.
