Swedish PM: We support process of Ukraine's accession to EU

KYIV. May 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomes the steps taken by the European Union to send ammunition to Ukraine and supports the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for ours. Sweden provides military support to Ukraine, and we will continue to provide military, financial and humanitarian assistance for as long as it takes,” he said at a press conference with participants of the Nordic summit and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Kristersson also welcomed the steps that the EU is now taking to provide Ukraine with ammunition.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Sweden, which holds the EU presidency, called the decision to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership “historic”. “We continue to support the merit-based process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU and help with reforms. This will allow Ukraine to start accession negotiations,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of bringing to justice those responsible for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, which also includes the deportation of Ukrainian children by Russians. “This should have consequences … In March we will have a meeting on the protection of children’s rights and we will talk about the protection of the rights of children from Ukraine,” Kristersson said.
