Nov 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine is counting on the consolidation of the international community, including the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN, ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly) to stop Russian aggression against Ukraine, First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Kornienko said.
"It is hard to deny that we can build a stable and settled world, basing it precisely on tolerance, respect and the rule of law. That is why it is very important for Ukraine to further consolidate the efforts of all members of the international community, in particular, ASEAN, in order to stop the brutal Russian aggression against Ukraine as soon as possible and restore peace to the long—suffering Ukrainian land," Kornienko said at the opening of the plenary session of the 43rd General Assembly of the ASEAN AI in Cambodia.
According to the website of the Ukrainian Parliament, on the sidelines of the General Assembly, the Ukrainian delegation also met with colleagues from the United States of America and South Korea.
According to Kornienko, during a conversation with U.S. representatives, the delegates "synchronized watches — and they showed the same time, namely the time of support for Ukraine."
During the meeting, the First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada drew the attention of American colleagues to the types of weapons needed by Ukraine. "The war continues and we need help in the form of weapons — first of all, artillery, drones and anti-drones, as well as warm clothes and campsites for our military in winter," Kornienko said.
In addition, he called on his colleagues to work together diplomatically with Asian countries, in particular, on the issue of spreading truthful information about Russia’s war against Ukraine.
"Our delegation was convinced of the stability of the congressmen’s intentions to continue supporting Ukraine. Representatives of the U.S. delegation assured that the American people are with Ukraine and our victory is their victory," Kornienko stressed.
The Ukrainian delegation also thanked its colleagues from South Korea for humanitarian assistance and for providing non-lethal weapons that Ukraine uses to fight the occupiers and its defense.
As reported, the Verkhovna Rada delegation is taking part in the ASEAN Interparliamentary Assembly for the first time.
