Ukraine negotiating with European countries on extradition of top corrupt officials – Justice Minister

KYIV. Sept 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Ministry of Justice is working on the return of corrupt individuals who fled to European countries, and in the first place, the ministry will attempt to bring back top-level corrupt officials,” Ukraine’s Minister of Justice Denys Maliuska said during a nationwide telethon.

“In European countries, where most of our top criminals are located, their courts are very cautious about extradition, especially due to the ongoing war in our country. Their lawyers, who are often former officials or top-level corrupt individuals, hire good legal representation and argue that sending such individuals to Ukraine would be extremely dangerous. Therefore, in most cases, unfortunately, our foreign partners currently refuse to extradite. But we believe that this is a temporary situation, at least in the case of top-level corrupt officials,” the minister said.

He emphasized, “This won’t be the case on a large scale anytime soon. Initially, we will target those who have stolen the most. We will try to bring them first. The middle fish and other individuals will come later.”

“After we adapt and fine-tune our system for receiving extradited citizens during wartime, the situation will undoubtedly improve,” Maliuska said.
