UN Secretary General disbands mission to investigate attack on Olenivka's colony due to inability to travel to site

KYIV. Jan 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres has disbanded a fact-finding mission about a strike on a colony in the occupied Olenivka village of Donetsk region in July 2022, which resulted in the death of prisoners, due to the lack of necessary security guarantees, Spokesman for the Secretary General Stéphane Dujarric has said.

During a press briefing in New York on Thursday, Dujarric said the Secretary General has decided to terminate the July 29, 2022 fact-finding mission in Olenivka in Ukraine due to the lack of conditions necessary to send the mission.

He said that, despite the agreement of the mission on the part of Russia and Ukraine, the UN considered that they had not received the necessary security guarantees.

As reported, on July 28, the Russian armed forces staged a thermobaric explosion on the territory of a correctional facility in Olenivka, Donetsk region, where Ukrainian prisoners of war were kept. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the explosion killed about 40 Ukrainian soldiers and injured 130 soldiers.
