UN Secretary General: We must invest in sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine so that this crisis does not turn into hunger, poverty for millions of Ukrainians

KYIV. Dec 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke about the constantly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine and stressed that the international community must invest in a reliable reconstruction of Ukraine so that this crisis does not escalate into poverty, hunger, poverty for millions of Ukrainians

At an international conference of solidarity with the people of Ukraine in Paris on Tuesday, he said the war in Ukraine is a constant humanitarian horror, worsening every day as temperatures drop. Civilians pay a heavy price in winter, especially those who live near the frontline, lack heating, water and basic services. Every major power plant and water supply system has been damaged from Russian shelling. Specialists are working non-stop to repair critical infrastructure.

The UN Secretary General said today there are 10 million consumers in Ukraine, among which families, businesses, hospitals, schools do not have electricity, and millions are disconnected from water and heating. He also said due to severe damage, houses, buildings and critical infrastructure will be renewed for years.

Guterres also said that 1,000 generators are now purchased or sent to Ukraine from abroad, but all this is just a drop in the ocean.

Thus, he said the volume of destruction in Ukraine needs strong support from the international community, which goes beyond humanitarian assistance.

The UN Secretary General said it is needed to invest in a reliable reconstruction of Ukraine so that this crisis does not escalate into poverty, hunger, destitution for millions of Ukrainians. All UN members must work together to create conditions for peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, he said.
