By KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has supported a resolution that recognizes the actions of Russians in Ukraine as genocide.
"The committee passed a resolution recognizing Russian actions in Ukraine as genocide," the U.S. Senate press service said.
"The crimes being committed against the Ukrainian people throughout Putin’s illegal and unprovoked war go against innumerable international conventions and can only be summarized as genocide," U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Maryland), Chair of the U.S. Helsinki Commission and author of the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.
The resolution adopted by the Committee condemns Russia for committing acts of genocide against the people of Ukraine; calls on the United States, along with NATO and EU allies, to support the government of Ukraine to prevent further acts of Russian genocide against the Ukrainian people; supports tribunals and international criminal investigations to hold Russian political leaders and military personnel accountable for war of aggression, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
The document also calls on the U.S. President to apply global sanctions against those responsible or involved in the genocide of Russia in Ukraine.
