West should be ready for long-term support for Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia – NATO Secretary General

KYIV. Jan 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the need for a long-term plan to support Ukraine by Western countries during its confrontation with Russia.

In an interview with the BBC Stoltenberg said all must be prepared for a long journey, because, Russia is not going to give up its main goal, establishing control over Ukraine.

According to him, the successes of the Ukrainian army should not create a deceptive feeling of an imminent victory for Kyiv.

"The Ukrainian forces had the momentum for several months, but we also know that Russia has mobilised many more forces, many of them are now training. All that indicates that they are prepared to continue the war and also try to potentially launch a new offensive," NATO Secretary General said.

Stoltenberg said in the current situation, Ukraine is in dire need of military support from the West. Stoltenberg said if NATO officials want a peace treaty to cement the position that Ukraine has won as a sovereign, independent, democratic state in Europe, they must provide Ukraine with support. Including military support, because this is the only way to convince Russia to sit down at the negotiating table and recognize Ukraine as a sovereign, independent state of Europe.

The Secretary General said most wars end with peace negotiations. Most likely, this will also be the case with this war. It is known the conditions under which peace will be concluded for Ukraine completely depend on the balance of forces on the battlefield.
