Zelensky to address European Parliament at Sakharov Prize ceremony

BRUSSELS. Dec 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – At the ceremony of awarding the prize of the European Parliament (EP) to the brave people of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky will address the MEPs via video.

This was announced in Strasbourg on Monday by head of the press service of the EP Jaume Duch Guillot.

The ceremony will take place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg at noon on Wednesday, December 14.

He said that the most important topics of the December plenary session always include the awarding of the Sakharov Prize. According to him, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola will award this prize to the brave Ukrainian people and to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who will address (the parliament) via video. He added that Roberta Metsola and a number of representatives of Ukrainian civil society would be there (in the press room) after the ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at noon, and would answer questions from the press.

Earlier, the EP announced that the Sakharov Prize would be awarded to Yulia Pajevska, founder of the evacuation medical unit Angels of Taira; human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk; the Yellow Ribbon Civil Resistance Movement; and Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, which is currently occupied by Russian forces.

In addition, during the plenary session, deputies will discuss the situation in Ukraine in the light of the destruction of critical infrastructure by the Russian Federation, and on Thursday a resolution will be voted on recognizing the Holodomor as genocide.
