KYIV. Dec 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held phone conversations with European leaders on Thursday evening following the decision of the European Council to begin negotiations on Ukrainian membership of the EU.
As the president said on his Telegram channel, he spoke with the presidents of France and Lithuania, the Prime Minister of Spain and the Federal Chancellor of Germany.
The head of state thanked Emmanuel Macron “for the warm congratulations and for all the support that France provided to Ukraine on its European integration path,” and Gitanas Nausėda for the fact that “Lithuania has all this time been one of Ukraine’s most dedicated lawyers in the EU.”
Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude to Pedro Sanchez for his personal support of today’s important decision of the European Council on Ukraine.
In addition, the President of Ukraine expressed confidence that the future “Spanish presidency of the EU will end with such a powerful result and will definitely go down in history.”
The President of Ukraine also later spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and expressed gratitude to him for Germany’s leadership role and his personal efforts. “Germany’s support is growing every day, Ukraine sees this and will always remember it,” Zelenskyy said.
