KYIV. June 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The peak of the water spill from Kakhovka reservoir is expected by the morning of June 7, PJSC Ukrhydroenergo said on Tuesday, citing the company’s CEO Ihor Syrota.
“Further on, the water level will stabilize. In four or five days, the water will begin to subside,” the head of Ukrhydroenergo said.
On Tuesday morning, Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center warned that on the Dnieper River below the town of Nova Kakhovka, as a result of the explosion of Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, an intensive increase in water levels is expected with flooding of riverbed territories and lower parts in Kherson, Beryslav, Skadovsk districts of Kherson region. It is the third (red) level of danger.
As reported, at 02:50 on June 6, Russian troops blew up structures at the occupied Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, which led to the flooding of a number of settlements in Kherson region. As of 11:00, some 16 gates of the station, the power plant building and the insertion of an earthen dam between the power plant building and the gateway and the administrative building were destroyed.
The explosion of the hydroelectric power plant did not directly affect the situation in the energy system of Ukraine. There are no threats to the stability of the power supply. The generated electricity is sufficient to cover the needs of consumers.
The destruction of the hydroelectric power plant is considered a violation of the Geneva Convention.
