KYIV. May 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to host a group of African leaders to discuss a potential “peace plan.”
“My discussions with the two leaders demonstrated that they are both ready to receive the African leaders and to have discussion on how this conflict can be brought to an end,” Ramaphosa told a joint press briefing with the Singapore prime minister, Reuters reported.
“Whether that will succeed or not is going to depend on the discussions that will be held,” he said.
According to the South African leader, the UN Secretary General, the United States and the United Kingdom have been informed about this initiative. Washington and London, among others, expressed their “cautious” support.
Earlier, South Africa stated that they “want to remain impartial” and prefer dialogue to put an end to the war in Ukraine.
